Bougainville State of Emergency extended for two months
The State of Emergency in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville has been further extended for another two months.
The Bougainville House of Representatives in its sitting today voted unanimously for the extension following the presentation of the Bougainville COVID19 Ministerial Taskforce Report and the Parliamentary Emergency Committee Report.
ABG Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Hon. Ezekiel Massat, moved the motion in parliament and explained the two key reasons for the extension. They are:
- To give legal effect to the conduct of the ABG 2020 general elections, and
- To continue the efforts to prevent the spread of coronavirus into Bougainville through border surveillance
The two months extension will lapse on the 14 August 2020.
