ABG and Regional Member partner to drive digital learning
Seven high schools across the region have become the latest beneficiaries of a digital transformation initiative, receiving over 150 digital tablets through a partnership between the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the Office of the Regional Member for Bougainville, Hon. Peter L. Tsiamalili Jr.
The initiative is a key milestone in Bougainville’s digitization journey with schools beginning to integrate digital learning and renewable energy technology. It also reflects Bougainville’s vision to integrate innovation and sustainability into its education system as part of the broader Bougainville Vision 2052 and the Education Reform Framework under the Human Capital Development Pillar.
Speaking during the official handover, the Chief Secretary of the National Government, Ivan Pomaleu, representing the Regional Member, said the initiative symbolizes a shared commitment to equipping Bougainville’s next generation with modern tools for learning.
“Today’s tablet presentation reflects our shared vision to transform Bougainville’s education through technology and sustainability. The future of our classrooms depends on how well we connect learning to modern tools and clean energy. Through these tablets, our teachers gain the capacity to deliver lessons efficiently, manage classrooms effectively, and connect our schools to the digital world,” said Mr Pomaleu.
The distributed tablets — preloaded with teaching resources, e-learning content, and classroom management tools, will benefit teachers and students from Hutjena Secondary, Tarlena (Bishop Wade) Secondary, Asitavi Secondary, Arawa Secondary, Buin Secondary, Tonu Secondary, and Bana High School.
This move marks another step toward the digital transformation of Bougainville’s education sector, where ICT tools are being increasingly used to enhance learning outcomes, improve access to educational materials, and reduce dependency on printed resources. The integration of renewable energy systems in Bougainville schools complements this effort, ensuring that even in remote areas, digital learning remains accessible and sustainable.
ABG Minister for Education, Hon Robin Wilson, described the initiative as a vital turning point in how Bougainville prepares its students for the modern world.
“Technology is here to stay, we have to embrace it and we have to work with it so we are not left behind,” said Minister Wilson.
He also emphasized the role of schools and teachers in promoting responsible digital use among students.
“I believe that with the schools taking charge of using technology they can also put some ethics into the use of technology at school-aged children, especially with the (sometimes irresponsible) use of social media today.”
Minister Wilson expressed his gratitude to Regional Member Tsiamalili for his leadership and ongoing commitment to improving education in Bougainville, noting that local-driven initiatives like this are paving the way for a sustainable and digitally connected education system.
