BACRA Council Members officially sworn in

The members of the Bougainville Agriculture Commodity Regulatory Authority (BACRA) Council were officially sworn in today, marking a progressive milestone towards enhancing the agriculture sector and maximizing the potential of Bougainville's natural resources.

The new council members are as follows;

Ex officio members:

  1. Kenneth Dovaro, Secretary Primary Industries
  2. Joshua Tauko, Acting Secretary Treasury & Finance
  3. Alex Kerangpuna, Secretary Commerce, Trade, Industry & Economic Development
  4. James Butubu, Chief Compliance Officer BACRA
  5. Wendy Sawa, Director Agriculture & Livestock

Non Ex officio members:

  1. Lucy Maisan, Farmer Representative North Bougainville
  2. Chris Korokoro, Farmer Representative Central Bougainville
  3. Edward Kamuai, Farmer Representative South Bougainville
  4. Rhoda Lunberg, Women’s Representative
  5. Robert Critchley, Business Representative 

ABG Minister for Primary Industries, Hon. Geraldine Paul, emphasized that this event marked a significant step in Bougainville’s journey towards fostering sustainable agriculture practices, promoting economic growth, and ensuring the well-being of farmers and communities.

“We recognize the vital role that agriculture plays in the development and prosperity of our region. Agriculture is not just a means of sustenance but a pathway to empowerment and progress for our people,” said Minister Paul.

“Through the Bougainville Agriculture Commodity Regulatory Authority, we aim to create a conducive environment for the growth of our agricultural commodities, streamline regulatory processes, and uphold the highest standards of quality and sustainability.” 

Minister Paul highlighted that the Council members bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to guide the regulatory authority’s activities, stressing their critical role in shaping the future of agriculture in Bougainville. “I urge each and every one of you to join hands in this endeavor, to share your insights, ideas, and experiences, and to contribute towards the prosperity and well-being of Bougainville.”

ABG Acting Chief Secretary Kearnneth Nanei addressed the Council members, stating, “You have a significant role. You will be part of the process to institutionalize BACRA as an entity.”

He also noted the importance of collaboration with national government agencies such as NAQIA, PNG Customs, and the PNG Cocoa Board in assisting Bougainville to operationalize BACRA when it comes to exporting.
