Bougainville marks PNG’s 50th Independence with Special Police Parade in Buka

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) joined the rest of Papua New Guinea in commemorating the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary with a special event in Buka, highlighting the region’s continued commitment to peace, security, and nation-building.

The celebration was marked by a Special Police Parade featuring the Bougainville Police Service (BPS), held in recognition of the force’s service and contribution as part of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.

Vice President of the Autonomous Bougainville Government, Hon. Patrick Nisira, who officiated the event, described it as a “double celebration”, also honoring the 24th anniversary of the Bougainville Peace Agreement signed in 2001.

“Although we are celebrating this milestone in July, after the inauguration of the 4th ABG government, it is fitting that we acknowledge the progress we have made towards peace and stability in our region,” the Vice President said.

In his address, the Vice President praised the BPS for its proud history of service, not only to the people of Bougainville but to the nation as a whole. As one of the oldest institutions in the country, the police force has played a vital role in maintaining law and order, promoting peace, and upholding the rule of law.

“As we celebrate PNG's 50th Independence Anniversary, we also acknowledge the dedication and commitment of our police officers who have served our nation with distinction,” he said.

The Vice President reaffirmed the ABG’s commitment to supporting the growth and modernization of the BPS, ensuring it remains responsive to the needs of the future.

“We recognize the critical role that BPS plays in maintaining peace and security in our region, and we will work to ensure that our police service is equipped to meet the challenges of the future,” he stated.

The Vice President called on the national government to continue its support for the BPS, describing its role as essential to the country’s stability.

“As we celebrate 20 years of service in Bougainville since 2004, we look forward to a bright future for our police service, and we are committed to working together to build a safer and more prosperous Bougainville,” he said.

The parade in Buka served not only as a ceremonial highlight of the independence anniversary but also as a reminder of the importance of unity, peace, and progress in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
