Bougainville Police infrastructure project launched

New Police infrastructures for Arawa and Buin, is expected to take place as part of the Australian and New Zealand Government’s commitment to the people of Bougainville.

The soft launch of the project took place in Buka this month and was witnessed by ABG Chief Secretary Kearnneth Nanei and National Government Chief Secretary Ivan Pomaleu and development partners from the Australia and New Zealand Governments.

ABG Chief Secretary Kearneth Nanei thanked the PNG and donor partners for enhancing and supporting institutional capacity building within the BPS.

‘Law and Order remains a critical element to address in a whole of government approach,’ added Nanei.

He elaborated that this project is very significant and it is critical to rebuilding.

Nanei further added that the ‘Bilateral Security Program’ will further benefit and support the BPS.

‘Law and Justice Sector is fundamental to engage as partners for Bougainville within this critical time-frame for Bougainville.

‘Strengthening the rule of law is important because the rule of law is here to stay,’ he added.

According to New Zealand’s Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand Charlie Gillard says the New Zealand government has been in the region for the past 28 years since the cease-fire, adding that they will continue to invest in capacity-building, community-policing and assisting the auxiliary policing.

‘The quality infrastructure is part of the K10 million Australian Aid funding for Police station buildings in Arawa and Buin and new phase of re-development for Hutjena training centre,’ said Gillard.

National Chief Secretary Mr Pomaleu said the PNG government continues to advancing peace and stability in the region.

He said the government in its commitment in the region is to building safer and resilient communities.

Pomaleu also announced that the PNG Government will also assist in the housing project to build six (6) new houses.

He acknowledged the strong leadership with the ABG and steadfast support of the Australian and New Zealand governments of the true genuine partnership.
