Bougainville sets 2027 as Independence Date

The Bougainville Independence Leaders Consultation Forum convened in Buka yesterday and reached a significant resolution, recommending that Bougainville’s independence take effect on September 1, 2027.
This inclusive and constructive dialogue brought together a diverse group of Bougainville leaders inclusive of government, church, veterans, women and youth representatives, ensuring a unified position ahead of the upcoming joint meetings with the Moderator, Sir Jerry Mataparae.
The Forum reaffirmed that the work of the Constituent Assembly will proceed independently and is not subject to the moderation consultation process.
The Leaders further emphasized that the purpose of the moderation process is to define a new and mutually respectful relationship between Bougainville and Papua New Guinea as two independent sovereign nations. This process will be guided by Melanesian principles of dialogue, respect, and cooperation, ensuring a peaceful transition to independence.
Additionally, the Forum reinforced that the national government of Papua New Guinea holds no authority to veto the referendum results.
Instead, it is expected to work in partnership with Bougainville in implementing the Bougainville Peace Agreement and facilitating a smooth transition to full sovereignty.
The Bougainville Independence Leaders Consultation Forum remains committed to a transparent, inclusive, and peaceful process that honors both the spirit and the provisions of the 2001 Bougainville Peace Agreement.
