Commissioner Tsianai reaffirms OBEC’s commitment to deliver successful elections for the people of Bougainville
The Bougainville Electoral Commissioner, Desmond Tsianai, has reaffirmed the Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commission’s (OBEC) commitment to delivering the 2025 Bougainville General Elections on time, within budget, and in accordance with legal requirements.
“Necessary preparations towards having the successful conduct of the elections have already started and we are aiming to have the elections delivered according to the elections schedule,” said Commissioner Tsianai.
“As in every election, work on updating the rolls is the first task and my team had already began with preparations towards having the rolls updated prior to the issue of the election writs,” he said.
Commissioner Tsianai said his team had not only printed the rolls but had the rolls binded and packed in preparation for the Training of Trainers (TOT) for the Ward Enrolment Agents which has been scheduled as the next activity on the election preparation calendar.
“We have also appointed Returning Officers (RO’s) and their Assistants (ARO’s) in consultation with the ABG Department of Community Government to assist in coordinating the elections,” Commissioner Tsianai said.
“These individuals will assist OBEC in coordinating mandated electoral activities such as voter enrolment and polling in their respective constituencies in the region as well as in the five provinces in PNG which are the National Capital District, Morobe Province, Madang Province, Eastern Highlands Province and in the West New Britain Province.”
Commissioner Tsianai said the list of the Returning Officers and their Assistants within the region and for the five provinces in Papua New Guinea is with the ABG Department of Law and Justice and will be gazetted soon.
He said once the gazette is released, the list will be published in the daily newspapers for public information consumption.
Despite the magnitude of the task ahead, Commissioner Tsianai assured that his team remains focused and dedicated to delivering a free, fair, and credible election for the people of Bougainville.
“It gives me great pleasure as the Commissioner to say that we are prepared and we are looking forward to deliver elections as per the schedule.”
