Condolence Message from the Office of the President on the passing of Songang Wenge

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the late Songang Luther Asikawa Wenge, Governor of Morobe Province, on the eve of Papua New Guinea’s celebration of its 50th year as an independent nation.

Governor Wenge was a true champion of the ordinary men and women of Papua New Guinea. As both a lawyer and a politician, he was dedicated to empowering people to realize their aspirations as good Christian citizens who could contribute meaningfully to the development of our nation. He was a courageous and outspoken leader who never hesitated to voice his concerns on matters of national importance and the protection of citizens’ rights. Above all, he firmly believed in putting the needs of the people first.

As Governor of Morobe Province, the late Songang Luther Asikawa Wenge was a steadfast supporter of Bougainville. He had a deep understanding of the legal foundations of the Bougainville peace process and the 2001 Bougainville Peace Agreement. He recognized the ultimate price Bougainvilleans paid for our freedom and always advocated for our right to attaining sovereignty. He fearlessly championed our cause on the floor of the National Parliament, speaking with conviction and without fear or favor.

On behalf of my wife and family, as well as the government and people of Bougainville, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Governor Wenge, the leaders of the Tutumang, and the people of Morobe Province during this time of grief.

The Songang was not only a beloved son of Morobe Province, he was the living embodiment of its spirit and values. May his soul rest in eternal peace in the arms of his Creator.

H.E. Ishmael Toroama, MHR
President of Bougainville
