First group of Bougainville students depart Goroka as repatriation begins
Officials from the ABG led by the Department of Education today oversaw the departure of the first batch of Bougainvillean students from Goroka to Port Moresby.
Team Leader Mr Lenga Ringin emphasized the ABG’s commitment to a well-organized and timely repatriation despite logistical challenges with securing space on flights out of Goroka.
“We are working tirelessly to finalize the arrangements for the students' return. We appreciate the patience, understanding, and resilience shown by the Bougainville students here in Goroka,” he said.
He ensured that the safe movement of all Bougainville students remains the Government’s highest priority and confirmed that as of yesterday, a total of 52 airline tickets have been issued, with additional tickets to be processed as seats become available.
Students expressed their gratitude for the presence and support of ABG officials who have been coordinating the repatriation directly from Goroka.
“We are very happy to see the officers on the ground and being with us. It gives us hope and reassurance that we will be returning home soon and start preparing for our online exams,” said Simon Porake, President of the UOG AROB Student Association.
The ABG team on the ground is mindful of the need to expedite the immediate return of students to Bougainville so they can settle in and adequately prepare for their online examinations, scheduled to begin next Monday, and calls for close collaboration with National Members for faster transportation options.
