Honoring 24 years of peace – Bougainville Peace Agreement Day

Today, 30 August, we commemorate the 24th Anniversary of the Bougainville Peace Agreement (BPA) – the historic accord signed between the people of Bougainville and the Government of Papua New Guinea in 2001.
The BPA formally ended the Bougainville Crisis, closing one of our darkest chapters in our history, and laid the foundation for lasting peace and the pursuit of our aspirations for self-determination.
Over the past two decades, our people, leaders, and the Autonomous Bougainville Government have shown resilience and dedication in implementing the BPA’s three pillars:
1. Autonomy
2. Weapons Disposal
3. Referendum
Through these efforts, we have achieved Autonomy, completed Weapons Disposal, and held a successful Referendum in which 97.7% of Bougainvilleans voted for separate Independence.
As we reflect on our past, we honor the courage of those who defended our land and people, and we reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity, and progress. History has shown that peace through peaceful means is the only path to lasting progress, and as we move forward, we must uphold the values and principles that ensure peace for generations to come.
Happy 24th Anniversary of the Bougainville Peace Agreement!
