Media Release from OBEC: Information on the 2025 Bougainville General Election Counting and Results process

The Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commissioner (OBEC) is pleased to announce that counting for the 5th ABG General Election has now started, and is expected to continue until 21 September.

The date scheduled for the Return of Writs is 22 September. Counting will take place in venues in Arawa, Buin and Buka, with Presidential votes counted in Buka. During this process, accredited observers and candidate scrutineers are invited to observe proceedings in order to verify the accuracy of the Count.

OBEC would like to provide the public, candidates, and the media with important information about how results will be released and the schedule for data updates.

Results Release
OBEC will release several types of results data as the counting progresses. The key types of data include:

  • Progressive First Preference Count Data: This data will show the ongoing tally of first preference votes for all races.
  • First Preference Results: For each race, OBEC will release the first preference results as soon as they become available.
  • Results at Each Exclusion Round: This data will show progressive updates throughout the candidate exclusion process

To ensure a steady flow of information, the four count centres will release updates regularly. Please note that while OBEC is aiming for regular updates, the timing may vary slightly depending on the pace of the count.

Official results will be made publicly available through OBEC’s official Facebook page and website. OBEC is working to ensure these channels are updated regularly to keep the public informed.

“OBEC remains committed to conducting a transparent and thorough election process. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support,” said Commissioner Desmond Tsianai.
