Media Statement from the Office of the ABG Minister for Education
The ABG Ministry of Education through its Department of Education in collaboration with the relevant Departments, are working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our Bougainvillean students at the University of Goroka in light of the current security situation.
We are committed to ensuring that our students at the University of Goroka are safe during this security situation. The Department of Education has been tasked by the Chief Secretary to coordinate efforts by the Autonomous Bougainville Government to act swiftly and ensure our Bougainvillean students at UOG are safe and that their immediate needs are taken care of. A Committee has been established in the ABG Department of Education to coordinate all ABG response, efforts and assistance towards the situation with our Students at the University of Goroka.
I would like to assure all Bougainvillean Leaders, families, parents, guardians and citizens that direct contact has been made with the student leaders at the University of Goroka by the ABG Department of Education. The Student Leaders have assured us that our Bougainvillean students are safe and that our leaders at the University of Goroka are working with the student leaders to ensure that our Bougainvillean students’safety and well-being are prioritized.
The UOG student leaders are in the process of putting together data and the list of Bougainville students at the UOG to ensure every Bougainville student is accounted for, assisted and moved to a safe location.
The Ministry of Education through the ABG Department of Education is organizing timely support from our ABG Leaders for our Bougainville Students. We will continue to monitor the situation and progressively update you all on the support given to our students and our efforts to ensure they are evacuated to safer grounds, and/or repatriated pending a decision from the Top Management Team of the University of Goroka.
The safety and well-being of our Bougainville Students is paramount and we at the Autonomous Bougainville Government remain committed to ensuring that their safety and well-being are assured during this difficult time.
