The latest from across Bougainville

Second seismic monitoring station installed at Mt Bagana

The ABG Department of Mining and Petroleum (DMP), in partnership with the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory (RVO), has completed the installation of a second seismic monitoring station at Mt Bagana in the Torokina District of South Bougainville.

This work completes the establishment of two seismic monitoring stations at Mt Bagana, a milestone achievement in the region's disaster preparedness efforts in relation to volcanic hazards.

The newly installed seismic station at Tsuriketo Hill complements the first station installed at Nukutsu Hill in December 2024. Together, these stations form a monitoring network that will provide real-time data, enabling scientists to monitor the volcano and give timely early warnings to direct informed decision-making for emergency preparedness and responses.

Secretary Peter Kolotein of the Department of Mining & Petroleum in providing an update, emphasized the importance of the monitoring system in safeguarding the lives of the people near the volcano also thanked all the stakeholders involved in the project, especially RVO and the Vuakovi community, for this significant achievement, despite the logistical challenges.

“A challenge for us now is ensuring we take care of this critical life saving public health and safety infrastructure”, he said.

This initiative reflects the ABG's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of communities living near the Mt Bagana Volcano.

Plans are underway to expand the seismic network across Bougainville, further strengthening the region's capability and resilience to geological hazards.
