The latest from across Bougainville

Condolence Message from the Office of the President for the Late Joseph Watawi

In Bougainville seldom have we seen an individual’s patriotism become their passion and life's work to ensure political liberation and freedom for their people.

The Late Joseph Watawi was an individual of such character, a man who believed that Bougainville’s desire to be free was a divine right of the people.

The Late Joseph Watawi affirmed his beliefs through his commitment to the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the people of Bougainville.

He played an integral role in the peace process during the negotiations and creation of the Bougainville Peace Agreement in 2001.

He was also instrumental in the formation of the first Bougainville House of Representatives in 2005.

He was elected as the inaugural Member for Selau Constituency and was appointed by President Joseph Kabui as Vice President and the Minister for Commerce.

As Vice President he worked with President Kabui to hold together a deeply divided Bougainville and bring scout socio-economic and political change.

These changes strengthened Bougainville and paved the way for unity to prevail and development to flourish.

While many can attest to the Late Joseph Watawi’s accomplishments, his overall legacy will be his commitment to Bougainville’s Independence Mission.

He worked hard during his time as an elected leader and as a leader of Selau to ensure the people's felt needs and aspirations were realised.

He leaves behind a legacy that we as a people must strive to emulate.

On behalf of the Government and people of Bougainville I offer our sincerest condolences to the family of the Late Joseph Watawi and the people of Selau.

May his Soul Rest in Peace.

 Hon. Ishmael Toroama MHR

President
