Condolence Message in the passing of Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan
There is no country who has done so much to restore its honor after committing atrocities during the Second World War than the Japanese.
As a former wartime colony of the Japanese Empire Bougainville has shared a close relationship with the government and people of Japan in the last 77 years since the end of World War II in 1945.
It is in respect of this relationship that I pay tribute to the Late Shinzo Abe former Prime Minister of Japan who was slain in a vicious attack on his life.
As Japan’s longest serving Prime Minister his legacy goes beyond the islands of Japan. The Late Shinzo Abe advocated peaceful coexistence through bilateral relations with other nations that promoted development, trade and peace.
He envisioned a strong Indo Pacific region through strengthened economic ties and infrastructure development. In Bougainville we have benefited from Japanese aid in the education sector (JICA Program), the K100 million aid package on building 12 bridges across mainland Bougainville and the tourism industry on Bougainville.
On behalf of the government and people of Bougainville I offer our sincerest condolences to Mr. Abe’s family and the Japanese government.
May his soul rest in peace.
Hon. Ishmael Toroama, MHR
