Statement from the Office of the President on Tonolei Incident

The unfortunate incident at Tonolei Harbour has sparked widespread debate on who should be blamed for the early morning assault that has left several innocent people dead.

While this is a question that remains to be answered my main concern at this time as President is the welfare of the people caught in the conflict and to stop the further loss of lives.

I appeal to the two factions involved in the conflict to refrain from harming the innocent including women and children who often become casualties in such situations.
I am also calling for the cessation of all hostilities between the factions so that we can begin to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Many Bougainvilleans will have differing views on the conflict but at this time we must put aside these differences for the sake of peace for our people in Konnou.
Our prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those lost in the conflict. May God give you peace in your time of bereavement.

Hon. Ishmael Toroama, MHR
President
