Bougainville Disaster and New Zealand Police successfully repatriate 8 Anir boat survivors
The Directorate of Disaster & Emergency under the Department of Community Government of the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG), in collaboration with the New Zealand Police, has successfully repatriated eight survivors from a recent boat mishap back to their community on Anir Island, New Ireland Province.
The survivors, who were rescued near Pororan-Hitau, Buka, were safely escorted by the Directorate of Disaster & Emergency and New Zealand Police team on a sea voyage to Pikan Village in Ward 10 of Anir Island.
Mr. Casper Kifunmat, Chairman of the Small Craft Association in Anir, expressed deep thanks on behalf of the chiefs and the entire Anir community. Mr Kifunmat acknowledged the crucial role played by the Directorate of Disaster & Emergency in providing support to the survivors during their time in Buka and commended the successful partnership with the New Zealand Police in ensuring the survivors’ safe return home.
Upon arrival, the team was honored with a traditional Anir welcome ceremony, including the presentation of shell money as a token of appreciation from the people of Pikan Village. The gesture symbolized the community's gratitude for the efforts in rescuing and caring for their family members during their stay in Buka.
Mrs. Belinda-Maree Lanbong, Secretary for Community Government, thank the New Zealand Police team leader in Buka Mr Owen Maurirere and Mr Derek Ilsion Senior Advisor for their support and assistance in the repatriation. Secretary Lanbong further emphasized the importance of safety at sea, urging boat owners and the public to take weather warnings seriously. “Boat operators must exercise caution, ensure adequate fuel supplies, and monitor weather warnings closely," she said.
Maritime Provinces indeed have a responsibility to collaborate on Search and Rescue (SAR) operations and ensure a smooth transition during repatriation processes, sharing responsibility across regions. This cooperation is particularly important when it comes to observing to the Small Craft Act 2011. When a maritime province activates a SAR operation, it is also responsible for overseeing the repatriation of survivors back to their province of origin.
The ABG Department of Community Government remains committed to supporting and assisting communities during emergencies and fostering strong partnerships with development partners like New Zealand.
