OBEC announces new dates for South Bougainville Former Combatants By-Election
The Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commissioner in consultation with the Speaker of the Bougainville House of Representatives, has announced the further extension of the By-election dates for the 2023 South Bougainville Region Former Combatants seat in accordance with the 2007 Bougainville Elections Act.
The new dates for polling are as follows:
- Polling starts: 15 November 2023
- Polling ends: 17 November 2023
- Counting starts 19 November 2023
- Counting ends: 25 November 2023
- Return of Writs: 27 November 2023
The extension and consequent delay is due to several factors including the unfortunate passing of Late Winterford Toreas, former Acting Electoral Commissioner and funding constraints to ensure legislative compliance with the conduct of the elections.
Newly appointed Acting Electoral Commissioner Desmond Tsianai assured that given the new extension, the Bougainville Electoral Commission will deliver the South Bougainville Former Combatants seat By-election accordingly.
“I would like to assure all candidates and the people of South Bougainville that my team will ensure that this election will be conducted according to the new scheduled dates and in a free, fair and transparent manner,” Tsianai said.
