President Ishmael Toroama in his address, encouraged ABG leaders and public servants to keep Bougainville’s journey for independence in their daily prayers, by seeking the Lord’s intercession for guidance, protection, mercy and divine wisdom to heed Bougainville’s cry for independence.

“We have undergone many trials and tribulations in our history, but the unwavering support and steadfast commitment of public servants, past and present, and their resilience and determination has brought us to where we are today,” Toroama said.

“Let's carry this same work commitment and passion into the 2025 as we intensify our efforts for building a new nation.” ABG Chief Secretary Mr. Kearnneth Nanei also encouraged public servants to be determined to work for Bougainville and its people.

“Our motivation should be to provide services to our Government and People above self-interest by demonstrating discipline and competency at all levels with commitment and trust,” Nanei said.

“The foundation of Bougainville’s aspiration for independence hinges on strong administrative foundations, which is the highest expectation that our leaders and people have of us during this critical timeframe,” Nanei added.

The three-day planning and reflection event concluded with a workshop on nation building to complement the post – referendum consultation process as the two governments move closer towards reaching an agreement on independence for Bougainville with the support of independent moderator Sir Jerry Mateparae.

The nation building workshop aimed at bringing together Bougainville leaders and policy thinkers to generate discussions and critical thinking to support the development of a Bougainville nation building framework. Chief Secretary Nanei explained that the Bougainville nation building framework brings together all ABG policy endeavours and initiatives into cohesion.

This includes President Toroama’s Six-Point Strategy, the Bougainville Long-term Vision 2052, the drafting of the Constitution of an independent Bougainville, the political consultations with PNG on the referendum results, the 2027 Medium Term Development Strategy and respective departmental corporate plans.
