Condolence Statement from the Office of the President on the passing of Late Ben Kamda

The Bougainville Revolutionary Army was formed as a fighting force to defend our people, our land and our rights. It was an institution that gave a voice to our people who were long marginalized by neo-colonialism and greed.

From the ranks of the military arm of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army rose several young men who were brave enough to stand our ground and defend our land and our people. The Late Ben Kamda was one of the few men who assumed senior roles in the BRA hierarchy.

The Late Ben Kamda was appointed BRA Chief Planner by the Late President of the BRA Francis Ona. In this capacity Mr Kamda was responsible for all BRA operations throughout Bougainville during the Bougainville Civil War from 1990 to 1997.

Following the 1997 Cease Fire Agreement, Mr Kamda took active part in the Bougainville Peace Process. He was active in the negotiations that laid the foundations for the 2001 Bougainville Peace Agreement, the weapons disposal program and formation of the Autonomous Bougainville Government in 2005. He remained an active peace builder until his untimely passing on October 5, 2024.

On behalf of my family and the Autonomous Bougainville Government I convey our deepest sympathies to the family of the Late Ben Kamda. He was a true son of the Revolution and a man who devoted himself to our ultimate mission to secure an Independent Sovereign State of Bougainville.

May his soul Rest in Eternal Peace.

H.E Ishmael Toroama, MHR,

President of Bougainville
